Cultural complex Isola Comacina

The Isola Comacina played a crucial role in the history of the Como region from the Roman to the Early Medieval period. Still today known as the "castle", it was a fortified citadel razed to the ground by inhabitants of the Como region in alliance with Frederick Barbarossa in 1169. Considered one of the most extraordinary Early Medieval archaeological sites in Northern Italy, the Isola Comacina was the subject of excavations carried out in the 1900's that brought to light exceptional remains datable up to the end of the XVI century. The finds are conserved at the Antiquarium "Luigi Mario Belloni and Mariuccia Zecchinelli".
