Basilican Complex of S. Maria Maggiore

The basilican complex of Lomello was constructed at the beginning of the XI century on pre-existing buildings. The basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, the atrium of which is built upon a tract of wall dating to the Late Roman era, is distinguished for the peculiarity of the design of the complex -a Latin cross with cross arms that are not perpendicular with the alignment of the nave - and for the originality of the decorative figures in stucco (XI century). The baptistery of S. Giovanni ad fontes, even though modified, as is the basilica, by restorations that began in 1940, still preserves the octagonal basin used for baptism by full immersion and a part of its repainted fresco cycle.
