The Garda region has the largest number of Italian pile-dwelling settlements included in the UNESCO lists; some are located on the side of the lake, others are in the interior located on inframorainic basins. Amongst this last mentioned type is the site at Lavagnone close to Desenzano del Garda, the finds of which are displayed in town museum.

The ancient lake at Lavagnone has developed into a peat deposit and today only a limited marsh area survives, however, the shores of the ancient lake basin were inhabited initially from the Mesolithic and up to the Late Bronze Age (around X century BC), with the period of maximum frequentation in the Early and Middle Bronze Age (2200-XIII century BC). The most significant find is an oak plough datable to around 2000 BC.
